The Miami Open kicked off at Hard Rock Stadium with 128 players in each draw competing to be crowned winner of the Masters 1000 event. Novak Djokovic, making his first appearance at the tournament since 2019, is aiming to become the first male player to win the title seven times in the Sunshine State. But the Serbian’s rocky form could allow emerging stars such as Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper to make a challenge for the trophy. Emma Raducanu is flying the flag for Britain in the women’s side along with Katie Boulter, who faces a tough trajectory in the tournament.
Preparations for the tournament were rocked by an announcement from the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) on Tuesday that they were taking legal action against tennis’ four governing bodies: the ATP, WTA, ITF and ITIA. The player-led organisation – co-chaired by Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil – have made claims of ‘systemic abuse and corruption’ against the quartet in a row which threatens to divide the sport. But while that situation bubbles away in the background, fans will be hoping the star names can deliver exciting tennis across the next two weeks.
