Pascal Zuberbuhler, who now works as a pundit on Swiss TV and for FIFA, has given Gareth Southgate some food for thought.
Speaking ahead of the looming quarter-final on Saturday, he said: “I would not like to be a head coach playing against this Switzerland team.
“This tournament is so difficult. You have to be better than the opposition and Switzerland are very difficult to predict because they have made changes, played different teams and really come together.
“There is almost an expectation in Switzerland that it will be a different starting XI each time and that they will win. England expect to see amazing attacking football because they have Bellingham, Kane, Foden and so on.
“I always want to see England do well because I had such a fantastic time there and it’s such a fantastic country. But so far they have not played very well.
“In the last game with Slovakia, you think they are going out and yet they win, they score and that’s all you need in tournament football.”
